Tech-Education : Evaluation of E-Learning Environments part 2

on Monday, 15 July 2013
Last post, we just learn how and what it is Formative Evaluation that have three types. That types are Design - Based, Expert Based, and User - Based. Today we will learn about the second type of Evaluation, Summative Evaluation.

Summative Evaluation

Summative Evaluation is Examines the impacts, effects, and/or outcomes of the object or process. Data collected summarizes the project by describing what happened subsequent to the delivery of the program or technology.

This evaluation focus on :
  • Deciding the object influenced the outcome or
  • The overall impact factors beyond the immediate target outcomes
  • Estimate the relative costs regarding the object
Comprises :
  • Outcome evaluations
  • Impact evaluation
  • Semi-structured and open-ended questionnaires
  • Cost-effectiveness

Outcome Evaluation

  1. Investigate whether the program or technology caused demonstrable effects on specifically defined target outcomes

  2. Formal assessment tasks

  3. Direct observation (combined with think-aloud, and structured responses)

  4. Protocol analysis (based on learners interaction with the exercise)

Impact Evaluation

  1. Assesses the overall or net effects of the program or technology as a whole

  2. User’s self-reporting
    • Post-hoc comments gained from querying, think-aloud, and interviews

Semi - Structured Questionnaires Evaluation

  1. Ascertaining user satisfaction with the materials

  2. Audit trail of users’ interactions

Cost - Effectiveness Evaluation

  1. Address questions of efficiency by standardizing outcomes in terms of users dollar costs and values
